Land

…when God began

Below is a multimedia reflection upon the creation story from the first chapter of the book of Genesis. It is intended to be used in Sunday morning Adult Christian formation as a means for people to reflect upon their relationship with God, each other, and the land. A method of guided reflection is provided. However, feel free to develop your own process as well. If you use the video and music I have created for this project, please make a donation to Episcopal Relief and Development at support.episcopalrelief.org.

Reflection Guide

  1. Invite someone to read Genesis 1:1 - Genesis 2:3 slowly and instruct people to listen not read along. Also direct them to note a word or phrase that sticks out for them.

  2. Repeat step 1 with a different translation and a different voice; again, asking people to note the word or phrase that sticks out for them.

  3. As time and translations allow read the scriptures again.

  4. Note some points about the creation story.* Suggested but not limited to

    1. In hebrew it begins in the middle of a sentence.

    2. It is not a recipe for creating a universe. It is a liturgical poem.

    3. The earth is created to produce: animals, plants, and humans.

    4. Other points that might arise from the words and phrase people noted.

  5. Invite people to watch this video and listen closely to the music.**

6. Ask them what they saw and heard?

7. Close with prayer (a suggestion would be the Prayer for Joy in God’s Creation from page 814 of the Book of Common Prayer, or one of your own creation)

*I’m heavily influenced here by the interpretation of Dr. Rebecca Wright for this interpretation of the creation story.
